An austenitic stainless welding wire used for joining two dissimilar steels—one stainless and one carbon steel; specifically for welding AISI 304 grade material to carbon steel or to similar forged or cast carbon steels. It can also be used for welding AISI 304 and other alloys of similar composition operating in highly corrosive environments. Its low carbon content reduces the likelihood of chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, thereby improving corrosion resistance. Apart from its higher silicon (Si) content, it is similar in grade to 309L. The increased Si content enhances arc stability and provides better fluidity and penetration in the weld pool, contributing to a smoother and more aesthetically uniform weld bead. However, due to dilution from the base metal during welding, if a low-ferrite or fully austenitic structure forms, the weld metal may exhibit higher susceptibility to hot cracking compared to the 309L grade.
