Machinability Comparison in Different Types of Stainless Steel

Stainless steels are preferred materials in many industrial applications due to their high corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, stainless steel types may differ in their machinability properties. In this article, we will compare the machinability of austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex and precipitation hardened stainless steel types.

 

Austenitic Stainless Steels

Austenitic stainless steels (for example, AISI 304 and AISI 316) are steels with high nickel and chromium contents. The machinability of these steels is generally considered good. Austenitic stainless steels have a tendency to oxidize at high temperatures, so appropriate coolants and cutting fluids must be used during machining. The high nickel content reduces the risk of cracking in the weld seams of machined parts after machining.

Ferritic Stainless Steels

Ferritic stainless steels (e.g. AISI 430) are steels with a high chromium content and no nickel. Ferritic steels are harder and less formable than austenitic steels. Therefore, it is inferior to austenitic steels in terms of machinability. Ferritic stainless steels tend to oxidize less during hot working and can be formed at lower temperatures
