Steels designed for the hardening of the surface layer

Carburized steels, with a low carbon content, allow pieces to be obtained that, after the mechanical processing and carburizing treatment, combine a high surface hardness with a good core toughness.

Thanks to the high surface hardness that can be obtained with the carburizing treatment, these steels are used to create those mechanical bodies for which a considerable surface hardness is necessary, such as gears, pins, bushes, shafts, and everything necessary for the transmission of motion.

The versatility of the range of carburized steels allows a vast range of uses to be covered, from the smallest gears to motor shafts of considerable size.

The heat treatments available for this type of steel – to be checked on a case-by-case basis according to the different qualities – are: rolled natural, workable annealed, isothermal annealed, globular annealed, normalized, and quenched and tempered.

RM20 Manganese and chromium steel with a content of alloy elements slightly higher than the previous type, suitable for large pieces.
RN0 RN0Pb Steel with a low chrome, nickel, and carbon content. Suitable for small pieces. It has a good cold deformability at the globular annealed state.
RN2 RN2Pb Steel with the addition of chromium and nickel in higher quantities than RN0. Used for pins and gears.
RN3 Steel with the addition of chromium and nickel in higher quantities than RN0 and RN2. Has a greater temperability, with higher surface and core characteristics.
RG2 Steel that originated in the automobile industry, no longer present in the international standards. Thanks to its high nickel content, it is used for pieces that are particularly subject to fatigue and vibrations.
RC0 Steel with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, suitable for pieces of a complex shape with good core tenacity.
RC2 RC2Pb Alloy steel with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. This is a carburized steel with excellent temperability that is often used to obtain pieces with high requirements and complex shapes such as gears and large shafts subject to fatigue and vibrations.
