Steels resistant to corrosion in aggressive environments

The special characteristic of stainless steels is that they have a resistance to corrosion that is significantly higher with respect to other steels; some of them also have an excellent resistance to high temperatures.

These characteristics of stainless steels are obtained thanks to the addition of chromium and other alloy elements, and allow use even in particularly aggressive environments such as chemical plants, marine environments and offshore platforms. These qualities of resistance to assaults makes them perfect materials to be used also in architecture to increase the durability of the objects created.

Some of these steels, thanks to a chemical composition that is particularly rich in nickel and chromium, are called “refractory steels” and can withstand high temperatures with a limited loss of the mechanical characteristics.

Stainless steels can be provided in their natural rolling state or annealed, normalized, quenched and tempered, or heat-treated. Bars, coils, and wires are available with a wide variety of packaging.

430 Basic ferritic stainless steel with a good resistance to corrosion: widely used in appliances, grills and the automobile industry. Difficult to machine by chip removal but with good cold deformability qualities. Some precautions are necessary during welding.
1.4105 It is similar to the previous one, but the addition of sulfur improves its machinability, making it however less resistant to corrosion. Used for machining with chip removal, it is the low carbon version of the American 430F type. It is also used because of its low magnetic hysteresis characteristics.
434 Steel similar to 430 with the addition of molybdenum, which confers a good resistance to atmospheric corrosion at room temperature and at higher temperatures.

410 Basic martensitic steel with a low carbon content, a characteristic that on one hand limits temperability and mechanical characteristics after tempering, and on the other increases versatility. Suitable for all those fields in which very high mechanical characteristics are not required. Corrosion resistance sufficient for non-demanding applications.
416 Steel similar to the previous one; the addition of sulfur improves machinability by chip removal, but reduces resistance to corrosion, which in any case is improved with the material at the quenched and tempered state.
420A Widely used quenched and tempered steel, with mechanical characteristics superior to those of the 410 base type at the quenched and tempered state.
420B Probably the most popular of the martensitic stainless steels, it has a higher carbon content than the previous type, and combines good corrosion resistance, good deformability at the annealed state and good temperability. Used for pump shafts, electric motor shafts, tools and cutlery.
420C Martensitic stainless steel with a high carbon content, suitable for pieces with an elevated hardness such as tools, cutlery, and blades in general. After quenching and tempering the surface can also be hardened by induction tempering.
420C1 Similar to the above but with a higher carbon content, suitable for small pieces with high hardness, including rollers and balls for special bearings.
430F Martensitic steel with low temperability. The addition of sulfur makes this type widely used for mechanical machining with chip removal, also without the quenching and tempering treatment. The resistance to corrosion is limited due to the presence of sulfur, but is better in any case with respect to the 416 type thanks to the addition of molybdenum.
1.4122 Steel similar to 420C but with the addition of molybdenum, which increases its resistance to corrosion at high temperature.
431 Martensitic stainless steel with the addition of nickel, which improves its resistance to corrosion. It is widely used even if, due to the limited carbon content, it has average mechanical characteristics.

302 Chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. The rather high carbon content allows high values of mechanical resistance to be achieved through extrusion hardening. Used for springs, antennas, and high resistance pieces.
303Plus Chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel with the addition of sulfur, which improves machinability by chip removal with machine tools, reducing however the resistance to corrosion in aggressive environments. The special “Plus” processing allows performances to be further improved during machining in terms of surface finish, tool life and machine productivity.
GVR Steel with characteristics similar to 303Plus, but with the addition of copper which, in addition to improving machinability on machine tools, also makes it suitable for certain types of cold deformation.
304 The reference steel for the chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel category, it has good resistance to corrosion, cold deformability, and polishability. Its versatility makes it widely used for cutlery, grills, urban fixtures, and appliances, as well as in the automobile industry and in other applications.
304L 304PLUS Steel with characteristics similar to 304 but with a limited carbon content, which determines a higher resistance to intercrystalline corrosion and improved weldability. The 304Plus version, in addition to a controlled sulfur content, undergoes a special processing during the steelworks process that further improves machinability by chip removal.
321 Steel with characteristics similar to 304; the addition of titanium makes it more stable and further improves its resistance to intercrystalline corrosion.
347 Steel with characteristics similar to the previous one, in which niobium is the stabilizing element to improve resistance to intercrystalline corrosion.
304ST Steel with characteristics similar to 304L, with a balanced analysis specially designed to enhance the cold deformability characteristics. Used for moulded pieces of all types (screws, pins).
304Cu The addition of copper to the base characteristics of 304 significantly increases cold deformability. It is therefore used for fasteners and in general for cold moulded parts when they are complex and have extreme deformations.
316 Chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel: this combination allows it to resist the action of chlorides. It is the typical steel for use in marine environments or in the chemical and food industries.
316L 316PLUS Steel with characteristics similar to 316 but with a limited carbon content, which determines a higher resistance to intercrystalline corrosion and improved weldability. The 316Plus version, in addition to a controlled sulfur content, undergoes a special processing during the steelworks process that further improves machinability by chip removal.
316Ti Steel with characteristics similar to 316; the addition of titanium makes it more stable and further improves its resistance to intercrystalline corrosion.
1.4435 This steel is derived from 316L with an increase in the minimum molybdenum and nickel content: it is one of the most resistant steels in marine environments and in general in the presence of chlorides. It is used in critical situations in contact with salt and in the food industry.
RODINOX® Thanks to extensive studies on the characteristics of stainless steels and market needs, Rodacciai has invented and patented Rodinox®℗, a low-nickel austenitic stainless steel wire with mechanical and corrosion resistance characteristics similar to those of 1.4301 (AISI 304), which it can replace in most cases. 1.4362 AISI 2304 Duplex steel of recent design, it has a high resistance to corrosion. It is used in place of 304 and, for certain applications, also in place of 316. Typical applications include the petrochemical industry, the paper industry, heat exchangers and valves for the oil and gas industry, and construction.
1.4460 AISI 329 SS 2324 (F52 - S32950) A duplex steel, it has a high resistance to corrosion and is widely used in particularly aggressive environments such as those of offshore platforms. With high percentages of alloy elements, it has a higher chromium content and lower molybdenum content than AISI 2205. It is widely used in Northern Europe.
1.4462 AISI 2205 F51 (F51 - S31803) A dual phase steel, it has a very high resistance to corrosion and is especially used in offshore platforms. With respect to SS2324, it has a slightly lower chromium content and a greater quantity of molybdenum.

310 The particular chemical composition of this steel, with high chromium and nickel levels, allows it to resist elevated temperatures in an excellent way, for example in pieces exposed to the heat of heat treatment ovens.
314 Similar to the previous type, it is differentiated only due to some analytical differences that further improve its resistance to high temperature.
